Who are we?

Rutgers

We are a Rutgers University Sports Club that teaches its members Kodenkan Jujitsu. Our form of jujitsu is sometimes called Danzan Ryu, or Hawaiian Style.

We are open to all Rutgers students, faculty, staff, and alumni. We meet in the College Avenue Gym on the New Brunswick campus.

What do we teach?

Sutemi Waza
Rolls and Falls

The Sutemi Waza are the first sets of techniques you’ll learn in the dojo. They will teach you how to protect yourself against various falls as well as how to control your body. Proficiency in these techniques are required before progressing to throwing arts.

Yawara
Hold Escapes & Joint Locks

The Yawara are a basic list of hand techniques. They include escapes from various holds and how to manipulate your opponent with joint locks. The holds begin with simple wrist grabs, but gradually build towards head locks and more agressive attacks.

Nage Te
Throwing Arts

The Nage list are comprised of various types of throwing techniques. They work by off balancing your opponent and using mechanical advantage to throw them. Many of our techniques are similar to those found in Judo.

Shime Te
Constriction Techniques

Shime Te include choking/strangling techniques. Our choking arts target the carotid arteries to reduce blood flow to the brain until loss of consciousness. The Shime Te also serve as a foundation for our grappling techniques.

Goshin Jitsu
Self Defense

The Goshin Jitsu list are sets of techniques that build off of the basic Yawara, Shime, and Nage. As you progress through the techniques, the level of commitment and escalation increases, testing you on your ability to focus under pressure.

Oku No Te
Advanced Combinations

The Oku are advanced combination techniques that are taught to brown belt students. They combine the fundamental principles learned in the basic arts into dynamic techniques that often counter an aggressive opponent.
